All About KHSHL Hockey
Welcome KHSHL Parents & Athletes
Thank you for being a part of the Kentucky High School Hockey League community! Your support plays a huge role in the success and growth of our student-athletes, both on and off the ice. High school hockey is fast, exciting, and demanding, and we are committed to helping you navigate the season with confidence.
This section is designed to give you quick access to the information, guidelines, and resources you need—from league rules and SafeSport policies to equipment tips, safety standards, and support for your player’s development.
We appreciate everything you do, and we’re proud to have your family as part of the KHSHL. If you ever have questions, our league coaches and board members are here to help.
USA Hockey Rules & Regulations
The Kentucky High School Hockey League (KHSHL) follows all rules and standards established by USA Hockey. Parents can review the complete, up-to-date USA Hockey Playing Rules, casebook interpretations, and safety policies at the official website of USA Hockey (link below).
USA Hockey Safe Sport
SafeSport is a national program created to protect young athletes and promote a safe, positive sports environment. It focuses on preventing bullying, abuse, harassment, and other types of misconduct in youth hockey. All coaches, volunteers, and league officials complete SafeSport training each year. Families can report concerns at any time through the SafeSport system. The KHSHL follows all USA Hockey SafeSport rules to help ensure every player feels safe, respected, and supported.
Academics & Eligibility
Academic success is a key part of being a KHSHL student-athlete. All players must maintain the minimum grade and attendance requirements set by their school in order to remain eligible to participate in practices and games. We encourage families to stay connected with teachers, monitor school performance, and help students maintain a healthy balance between hockey and academics.
If a player becomes academically ineligible, the school’s policy will determine when and how they may return to competition. Our goal is to support student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the ice, and we appreciate parents partnering with us to help every player succeed.
Financial Investment
High school hockey is a rewarding experience, but it does come with financial commitments. Families can expect expenses such as league fees, equipment purchases, team apparel, and travel costs throughout the season. While each program may vary, these items generally include skates, protective gear, sticks, tape, sharpening, and occasional replacement items as players grow or equipment wears down.
The KHSHL encourages families to budget ahead, explore used-equipment options, and take advantage of local gear-swap groups or grant programs when available. Our goal is to help make the sport accessible and manageable for all players. If your family has concerns about affordability, we encourage you to speak with your team’s coach or manager so we can help connect you with available resources.
